Should We Trust Science?
As I write this, we are in the middle of a global pandemic. Debate is raging about whether or not children will return to school in the Fall. It is probably too hopeful to think that people with power will recognize the value of education in democracy. Every teacher in America will tell you that the value of school extends far beyond the need to provide a place for children to go each day when their parents go to work.
At this point, two arguments are getting the most attention. The economy and the need to get people back to work is on one side of the argument, and the health and safety of students and teachers is on the other side.
In July, someone in the White House said that science should not stop us from sending kids to school. I wish that the people in power were talking about the social, emotional, and physical health of the children and the teachers.
I also wish someone would talk about democracy.
